Suit colors by season
Every menswear guide names the same six suit colors and stops. The useful question is which version of each one suits you — because a navy cut for a Deep Winter and a navy cut for a Soft Autumn are visibly different cloths, and wearing the wrong one is why a suit can fit perfectly and still look borrowed.
Navy is the first suit almost everyone buys and the one where season matters most, because the range runs from a soft grayed blue to near-black ink. Below is the navy Frame Atelier recommends for each of the twelve seasons — the same value the app returns after reading your photo.
| Season | Navy |
|---|---|
| Light Spring | Light Navy #4A5A74 |
| True Spring | Warm Navy #34445E |
| Bright Spring | Bright Navy #2E415E |
| Light Summer | Soft Navy #4A5870 |
| True Summer | Slate Navy #3A4660 |
| Soft Summer | Soft Navy #3C4356 |
| Soft Autumn | Soft Navy #3A4458 |
| True Autumn | Inkwell Navy #2F3E48 |
| Deep Autumn | Dark Navy #2A3444 |
| Deep Winter | Blue-Black Navy #1E2536 |
| True Winter | Graphite Navy #262E40 |
| Bright Winter | Graphite Navy #242E44 |
Warm seasons get a navy with softness and a touch of gray or slate in it. Cool seasons get one that runs closer to ink. Put a Soft Summer’s navy next to a Deep Winter’s and the difference is obvious on the hanger — it is only invisible in a catalogue photograph.
The second suit. Charcoal is safer than navy across seasons because depth carries it, but the undertone still shifts: warm families get a charcoal with brown or olive in the base, cool families get one built on slate.
| Season | Charcoal |
|---|---|
| Light Spring | Soft Charcoal #54504A |
| True Spring | Warm Charcoal #4A443C |
| Bright Spring | Warm Charcoal #3A3630 |
| Light Summer | Soft Charcoal #4E525A |
| True Summer | Cool Charcoal #3A3E46 |
| Soft Summer | Slate Charcoal #3B3E44 |
| Soft Autumn | Warm Charcoal #3E3A36 |
| True Autumn | Warm Charcoal #403A32 |
| Deep Autumn | Warm Charcoal #38332C |
| Deep Winter | Charcoal #34363C |
| True Winter | Charcoal #33353A |
| Bright Winter | Charcoal #303338 |
Gray is where seasonal color analysis earns its keep, because “gray suit” describes three different garments. Light gray is a spring-and-summer suit, mid gray is the year-round business option, dark gray substitutes for charcoal with less severity.

Brown is the most seasonal suit color there is. Autumn wears it better than any other family, and some cool seasons have no brown that works at all. That is a real finding, not a hedge: where the table below is empty, the app recommends no brown suit for that season.

Summer suiting trades depth for lightness, which makes undertone more exposed, not less — a light suit sits right beside your face in bright daylight. Evening runs the other way: the darkest neutral your coloring carries cleanly.

Notice how few seasons list black for evening. Black is a Winter privilege; most seasons look better in espresso, deep slate or their own darkest neutral.
All of the above assumes you know your season. If you do not, the analysis takes about a minute: photograph yourself in indirect daylight with a white sheet of paper under your chin, and Frame Atelier reads your undertone, depth and contrast from the photo on your own device. It returns your season, then the exact suit colors above — plus shirts, ties and leathers built to go with them.
